About Us

My Story and Mission

Wearing any piece of jewelry is a personal choice. It refreshes a memory, an association with place and sometimes builds a bond or connection for future generations. The jewelry I work with bonds me with Afghanistan—my home country. My late father fed and clothed us by making vintage pieces of jewelry during the Afghan-Soviet war and later in refugee camps in Peshawar, Pakistan. My father transferred his art of making jewelry to our entire family as a way to continue our love of art and our culture when our life conditions were very difficult in refugee camps. The money he earned from making jewelry not only helped our family survive but also enabled us to go to school and get an education. It was because of his art that I was able to get higher education and later secure a prestigious Fulbright scholarship to enter Cornell University.

Many villages and cities in Afghanistan, are still living in desperate, unfavorable conditions due to prolonged war. These families like ours rely on small-scale industries, including silversmithing and goldsmithing. The situation continues to be dire and my heart goes out to them because of their limited market access; they are working hard yet working poor.

I want to see every child in Afghan villages get educated and have the opportunity to live a relatively stable life. I also feel the importance of sharing our beautiful culture. This is my dream and I want others in my country to be able to realize their dreams through silversmithing amidst the violence and suffering.

Too many people equate Afghanistan solely with violence and suffering. It is our hope that these beautifully crafted jewelry items—under the Afghan Silver brand—will capture the other side of our remarkable country.  Indeed, from our hands to yours!

Gilt silver Jewelry

Our gilt silver collection comes directly from the tribal belt of the Hindu Kush Mountains. The origin of this style of jewelry is believed to be in the craft of the Kuchi tribe. The Kuchi were a nomadic group of traders- living the life of gypsies throughout Central. Asia. Afghani Kuchi Jewelry has been exuberant, joyful, and eclectic. Their festive pieces were filled with color and sound, with dangling charms and bells creating music. We bring you all these styles from our hands to yours.

Gemstones

Afghanistan has historically been well known for its lapis lazuli deposits, however, significant amounts of fine emerald, tourmaline, kunzite, and some rubies are now emerging from my country. The mines have recently produced gem materials are for the most part in the northeastern portion of the country, north and east of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. Emeralds have been found primarily in the Panjshir Valley. Pegmatite gems-tourmaline, kunzite, and aquamarine-have been found in the Nuristan region, crossing the provinces of Laghman and Konar. Rubies have been found in the southern portion of the Sorobi district, in Kabul Province. We deal with rough stones, lapis lazuli, turquoise, emerald and topaz, spinel, tourmaline, kunzite, amethyst, aquamarine, citrine, peridot, quartz, ametrine, apatite, sphene etc.
